David Purcey, 25, made his eighth start for the Jays Wednesday night, facing the Rays for the first time. The Jays' first-round pick in the 2004 draft came apart at the seams in his previous outing against the Yankees, a common experience for rookies when facing the Bronx Bombers for the first time. Which made Wednesday night's outing against a team as hot as the Rays a good bounce-back test for Purcey. Purcey passed with flying colors as he came up with his most impressive outing of the season in a 1-0 loss to the Rays. Purcey threw his first complete game, needing 92 pitches and throwing just 22 balls.
